PLANNING (LISTED BUILDINGS AND CONSERVATION AREAS) ACT 1990 (“THE 1990 ACT”), SECTION 69

BURLEY CONSERVATION AREA

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN under the provisions of the 1990 Act that New Forest National Park Authority (“the Authority”) has determined that the area described in the Schedule to this Notice is an area of special architectural or historic interest, and that it is desirable to preserve or enhance its character or appearance. Accordingly, on 29 January 2009, it amended the scope of Burley Conservation Area.

The principal effects of the designation of this area as a conservation area are as follows:

  • 1 The Authority is under a duty to prepare proposals to ensure the preservation or enhancement of the area.
  • 2 The consent of the Authority must be obtained prior to the demolition of any building in the area.
  • 3 Additional publicity must be given to planning applications for development in the area.
  • 4 In carrying out any functions under the planning acts (and, in particular, in determining applications for planning permission and listed building consent), the Authority and the Secretary of State are required to take into account the desirability of preserving or enhancing the character or appearance of the area.
  • 5 Six weeks notice must be given to the Authority before works are carried out to any tree situated within the area.

The boundaries are:

In a clockwise direction, from a point at the junction of Ringwood Road, Crow Road and Castle Hill Lane, northwest along the southwest boundary of the arable land and including land including Vale House, then northwest and east following the boundary between the arable land and the open Forest to and including the northern boundary of Sandhills. Northwest, then east to include the lands and including Lucy Cottage and Coach Hill House. East across a gravel track to join Coach Hill Lane, then northeast along the northwest boundary of Coach Hill Lane to include the lands and including Gorselands and Gorselands Cottage. Northwest along the western boundary of Coach Hill Lane including lands and including Whitemoor Orchards, Whitemoor Cottage, Whitemoor House, Coach Hill Cottages and Skylark Farm. South and west around the boundary of the arable land, then south, southeast, southwest, northwest, southeast and northeast including lands including Vereley Lane Cottage, Broomfields, Burley Croft and Holly Cottage. Northwest along the south western boundary of Coach Hill Lane and arable lands, then northeast and east to the boundary of Vereley Lodge. North and east including lands including Vereley Lodge and Vereley Farm, then northeast along the north western boundary of the arable land including land including Merci House. Then east along the northern boundary of the arable land including land including Vereley to a point where it joins Mill Lawn Brook, east along the southern boundary of Mill Lawn Brook to the track leading to Turf Croft Farm. North, east, south, west, north and west along the boundary of the lands including land and including Turf Croft Farm and Turf Croft, then south along the eastern boundary of the road from Turf Croft to a point where it joins the boundary between the arable land and the open Forest. Northwest to the boundary of Stag Park Wood, then west and south along the boundary between the arable land and the open Forest including land including Berry Knoll. Southwest along the boundary between the arable land and Common Moor to the northeast boundary of Fernlea Bungalow, then east, southeast, east and southeast along the western boundary of the common to its junction with Forest Road. Northeast along the northern boundary of Forest Road to the ford, then north along the west bank of the stream to the boundary of the enclosed land. North, southeast and south along the boundary including land including Narrow Water, then southeast along the northern boundary of Forest Road to a point southeast of Stormy Bushes including lands including Rose Cottage, Blackhill Cottage, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10 Forest Road, Rye Croft, Blackhill Bungalow, Will’s Patch, Springfield, Glenspinney, Rye Close, Beeches Brook, Wards Plantation The Wards, Manor Farm, Gorse Cottage, Burley Manor House, Brookside Cottage, Meadow Cottage and Brookside Farm to a point where the boundary joins Forest Road. Northeast along the boundary between the arable land and the open Forest to a point where the boundary joins Lyndhurst Road at Woods Corner including lands including Oakley and Oakley Gate. Southeast along eastern boundary of Mill Lane to the land including land including Woods Corner Cottage, then east and south around the land including land and including Woods Corner to a point where the boundary rejoins Mill Lane. Southeast and south along the north eastern boundary of Mill Lane including lands including North Farm, North Farm Bungalow, Hunnersley, Stavegate, The Lodge Burley Grange, September Cottage, Oak Paddock and Lucy Hill. East, south, southwest and northwest along the boundaries including lands and including Mill Lawn House, Mill Lawn, Lester Cottage, Waterfall Cottage and Mill Stream. South along the eastern boundary of Mill Lane to include the open land of Burley Lawn to the west and including the lands and including Benedicts and Forest Way. East along the northern boundary of Bisterne Close including lands including Lester Square, Forest Corner, Phillips, Forest Orchard, Melbow, Belmont and Bush Cottage. North, east, south, east, south, west including lands including Little Bisterne, Blake’s Bargain, Amberwood, Badgers Walk. Then east along the northern boundary of Bisterne Close including lands including Rooks Acre and Abos. North, west, north, east, south, east, north, east, south, east, north, east, south and southwest along the boundaries including land including Pipers, Yewtree Cottage, Holly Cottage, Holly Grove Cottage, Sunny Cottage, Kingswood and Markway Lodge. East, south, west, east, west, east, south and southwest following the boundaries of the scrub land and Shoot Wood on the eastern side of Bisterne Close. South and west along the boundary of the wide verges and scrub on the southern side of Bisterne Close to the boundary of Holmans, then south including the land and including Holmans and along the footpath to a point where it joins the road leading to the public car park. West along the southern verge of this road to its junction with Bisterne Close, then north along the western verge of Bisterne Close, then west and north including the lands and including Durmast House and Durmast Lodge. West along the southern boundary of Cott Lane to a point at its junction with the entrance to the car park south of the cricket ground, the northwest along the southern west boundary of the cricket ground to a point opposite the junction of Station Road and Moorhill Road. Southwest along the eastern boundary of Moorhill Road to its junction with the track leading to The Cottage, then south along the eastern boundary of this track, then southwest and northwest including the lands and including The Cottage, Goats Pen and Shappen. West along the southern boundary of Moorhill Road to the boundary of Lanzerac, then southeast, southwest, northwest, southwest and northwest including the lands and including Lanzerac, Moorhill House Hotel, Cherry Tree Cottage and The Beeches. Southwest along the northwest boundary of Moorhill Road including the land and including Shappen House. Northwest and southwest along the southern boundaries of and including the lands and including Shappen Hill Cottage, Highwood, Orchard House, Burbush Farm, Burbush Farm Cottage, Burbush House and Burbush Lodge. Northwest and north to a point where the boundaries join Pound Lane, then northwest across Pound Land following the boundaries between the agricultural land and the open Forest including the lands and including Trokes Mead, Atkins Plot, Long Pound House and Sandford Way. Northeast and north along the boundary of the open Forest to the land of including the land and including Beacon Cottage, then northwest and north following the boundary of the open Forest including the lands and including Cranes Moor, Burley Beacon and Ashen Wood. West and northwest following the boundary of the open Forest and the scrub and woodland to the west of Castle Hill Lane including Coffin’s Holms, then north along the boundary of the open Forest including the land and including Belvedere. North along the western boundary of the scrub land adjacent to Castle Hill Lane to a point where it joins the outer ditch of Castle Hill Fort. Northwest, north and northeast around the outer ditch and earthworks on the western side of Castle Hill Fort to a point north of the earthworks where it rejoins Castle Hill Lane. North along the western verge of Castle Hill Lane to it junction with Ringwood Road.
