Statistics indicate low individual insolvency rates in London

The Insolvency Service has released statistics for individual insolvencies by Parliamentary constituency in England and Wales for 2018, with the report showing individual insolvency rates were generally lower in London than any other region.

Individual insolvency rates in England & Wales 2018

Statistics reporting individual insolvencies by Parliamentary constituency in England and Wales have been released by The Insolvency Service. The report for 2018 shows that:

  • total insolvency rates were generally highest in Parliamentary constituencies in the South West, North East, the North West and East Midlands
  • total insolvency rates tended to be at their lowest in Parliamentary constituencies in London and the South East.

The overall rate of total individual insolvencies per 10,000 adults in England and Wales increased from 21.4 in 2017 to 25.0 in 2018. This was the third successive year individual insolvency rates rose and represents the highest rate since 2011. However, in the report The Insolvency Service states that even small changes in the number of insolvencies can have a large impact on the individual insolvency rate.

Individual insolvency rates by Parliamentary constituency 2018

Out of all the Parliamentary constituencies in England and Wales:

  • the highest total individual insolvency rate was found in Plymouth, Moor View, with a rate of 54.9 per 10,000 adults
  • the lowest total individual insolvency rate was found in Hampstead and Kilburn, with a rate of 8.4 per 10,000 adults
  • in 483 of the 573 Parliamentary constituencies the total insolvency rate was higher in 2018 than in 2017

Overall, six out of the 10 Parliamentary constituencies with the highest total individual insolvency rates were in or adjacent to coastal/docking areas, three were in Stoke-on-Trent and the final constituency was Worsley and Eccles South.

Elsewhere, Sheffield, Hallam had a rate of 8.7 in 2018 and has the lowest individual insolvency rate for the previous three years. The other nine of the 10 Parliamentary constituencies with the lowest total individual insolvency rates were all in London.

The largest increase in rate was in Worsley and Eccles South, which had 47.4 insolvencies per 10,000 adults in 2018, an increase of 17.4 since 2017. The largest decrease occurred in York Central, which had 23.2 insolvencies per 10,000 adults in 2018, a decrease of 6.4 from 29.6 in 2017.
