PLANNING (LISTED BUILDINGS AND CONSERVATION AREAS) ACT 1990

EXTENSIONS AND AMENDMENTS TO THE PONTYPOOL TOWN CENTRE CONSERVATION AREA

Notice is hereby given that on 2 November 2010 Torfaen County Borough Council as local planning authority, in pursuance of the powers conferred by section 69 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, designated extensions and alterations to Pontypool Town Centre Conservation Area to include

• The northern end of George Street as far as the north boundary of 41 George Street to the north and the western boundaries of Castle Mews and 33 to 41 George Street to the west.

• The addition of the Afon Llwyd from the current eastern boundary of the conservation area, along the southern boundary of the riverbank until appoint 30m due west of the bridge, where the boundary turns north until it reaches the centre of the river which it then follows until the boundary of St James School.

• The removal of the new development along the north side of Crane Street, so that the western boundary of the Conservation Area follows the rear boundaries of 3-17 George Street as far as the wall of 1 George Street, which it follows round to the rear pavement of Crane Street which it crosses and then follows the front pavement of Crane Street south west until it meets the current boundary.

• The removal of all the properties in Aneurin Bevin Court and 1 and 2 Lower Bridge Street. The new boundary of the conservation area follows the north boundary of Lower Bridge Street from the west boundary of Moriah Chapel to a point north of the west boundary of 16-30 Trosant Street where it turns south along those boundaries until it reaches the existing southern boundary of the conservation area.

The effect of this designation is to define the area that has special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance, and where special attention should be paid to the character and appearance of this area in the exercise of powers under the Town and Country Planning Acts. This means that under section 74 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 consent will be required to demolish buildings over 115m3, and under section 211 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 notice must be given to the council in respect of any proposal to fell, top, lop, uproot or wilfully destroy any tree in the designated area.

An updated Character Statement, including a map showing the extensions and amendments of the Pontypool Town Centre Conservation Area, is available on the Council’s website www.Torfaen.gov.uk and may be inspected at Planning Reception, County Hall, Cwmbran, Torfaen NP44 2WN (Monday to Thursday, 9.00am to 5.00pm, Friday 9.00 am to 4.30pm).
