CROSSRAIL BILL
NOTICE OF FURTHER ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION
On 22 February 2005 the Secretary of State for Transport introduced the Crossrail Bill in Parliament which provides for a new cross London rail link (to be constructed by an undertaker to be nominated by order made by the Secretary of State) by way of new railways and improvement of existing railways in existing railway corridors from Maidenhead and Heathrow to Paddington, continuing in new twin tunnels under central London and diverging as two branches, one surfacing at Custom House then passing under the River Thames at Woolwich in twin tunnels and then continuing on the existing North Kent Line to Abbey Wood. The other branch would surface at Pudding Mill Lane near Stratford and continue on the existing railway corridor to Shenfield. Further information is available in relation to the environmental statement which was deposited with the Bill. As from 27 May 2005 a copy of that information, comprising further details on construction timetable and strategy; noise insulation; climate change; impacts relating to health; Hanbury Street; Bow Midland Yard West; and Romford depot and station transport assessment, may be inspected, free of charge, at each of the offices and libraries mentioned in the Schedule below and for sale at those offices marked thus and for inspection and sale at the offices of Cross London Rail Links Limited at 50 Broadway, London SW1H 0RG. As from 27 May 2005 the documents will be available on Cross London Rail Links’ website at www.crossrail.co.uk and on the Department for Transport’s website at www.dft.gov.uk. Any comments about the further environmental information should be sent to the Secretary of State c/o Tim Neate, Consultation Manager, Department for Transport, Major Projects Division 3, Zone 2/08, 76 Marsham Street, London SW1P 4DR (e-mail: crossrail@dft.gsi.gov.uk) on or before 8 July 2005. Comments on the further environmental information will be presented to Parliament and published. Submitting comments to the Secretary of State does not affect the entitlement of a person to make objections to the Bill by depositing a petition in Parliament in accordance with any Order made by either House of Parliament in due course. That Order will set out timescales for the process. NOTICE OF EXTENSION OF COMMENT PERIOD ON MAIN ENVIRONMENTAL STATEMENT The Secretary of State for Transport also invited comments on the main Environmental Statement (ES) for Crossrail when it was published in February. That comment period closed on 17 May 2005, and a substantial number of submissions have been received. Given that Second Reading of the Bill is not expected to take place until after the Whitsun Recess, the Secretary of State has decided to extend the period for comment by three weeks, to 10 June 2005, to give people a further opportunity to offer views on the ES. Comments on the main ES should be sent to the same address as given above. All comments received will be presented to Parliament and published. A copy of the ES and Non-Technical Summary are available for inspection at the locations mentioned in the Schedule. Electronic copies of these documents (together with supporting specialist reports) are also available on the Department for Transport’s website and Cross London Rail Links’ (CLRL) website as detailed above.
