NOTICE OF DESIGNATION OF CONSERVATION AREA
PLANNING (LISTED BUILDING AND CONSERVATION AREAS) ACT 1990, SECTION 69
SILSDEN CONSERVATION AREA

Notice is given under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act, section 69, that City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council, has determined that the area described in the Schedule to this notice is an area of special architectural or historic interest the character of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance and has therefore designated this area as a conservation area. The effect of the designation of the conservation area is as follows: 1. Conservation area consent will now be required for the demolition of all unlisted buildings (other than excepted buildings) in the area. 2. Planning applications for development which would in the opinion of the local planning authority affect the character or appearance of the conservation area must be given publicity and representations received as a result of the publicity must be taken into account in determining the application. 3. It becomes an offence, subject to certain exceptions to cut down, top, lop, uproot, wilfully damage or wilfully destroy any tree in the area except with the consent of the local planning authority. 4. The local planning authority are now under a duty to formulate and publish proposals for the preservation and enhancement of the area. A map of the conservation area may be inspected, free of charge, during normal office hours, at the Keighley Planning Office, Keighley Town Hall, and at the Silsden Library, Memorial Gardens, Silsden. Schedule The Silsden Conservation Area Silsden Conservation Area forms a linear pattern in a north to south direction. Its focal points are along the busy retail and commercial areas along Keighley Road and Kirkgate, which jointly form the major throughfare in the town. Along these roads are important landmark buildings, Corn Mill House towards the south, Town Hall, and a range of ecclesiastical buildings at the centre with residential properties, memorial gardens and public houses in the north of the Conservation Area. At the south of the Conservation Area the Leeds and Liverpool Canal crosses beneath the main road and influences the character of Silsden with the Wharf at the western extremity and Waterloo Mills to the east. The Silsden Beck follows the north to south line and forms part of the boundary to the east, at the rear of both the Methodist and Catholic Churches at Wesley Place. The western boundary incorporates St James Church, the Vicarage and the church grounds. Towards the north of the Conservation Area the character becomes more residential as the roads branch along Briggate and Bradley Road to the west as far as Greengate. Bridge Road and Chapel Street continue to the east as far as Pickard Lane. 9 July 2004.
