NOTICE OF APPLICATION FOR CONSENT UNDER SCHEDULE 10
Notice is hereby given in accordance with Schedule 10 of the Water Resources Act 1991
(as amended by the Environment Act 1995) that the applications (Ref no 241/1103) have
been made to the Environment Agency, North East Region.
As part of a regionwide water supply improvement programme Northumbrian Water Limited
are upgrading Wearhead Water Treatment Works at Wearhead, Co. Durham.
This investment involves the requirement to apply for two temporary consents during
the commissioning phase and two variations to the existing consent to reflect normal
operation.
The commissioning discharges proposed are as follows:
(i) A discharge of up to 18,000 cubic metres per day of clarified water to the Burnhope
Burn at NGR NY 8502 3904 for a period of 6 weeks.
(ii) A discharge of up to 36,000 cubic metres per day of dechlorinated potable water
to the Burnhope Burn at NGR NY 8534 3932 for a period of forty-five days.
The final discharges proposed are as follows:
(iii) A discharge of up to 18,000 cubic metres per day of clarified water to the
Burnhope Burn at NGR NY 8502 3904. This will be an infrequent discharge and it is
anticipated that this would occur 4 times per year.
(iv) A discharge of up to 2,000 cubic metres per day of treated washwater to the
Burnhope Burn at NGR NY 8509 3917.
A copy of the application may be inspected, free of charge, at all reasonable hours
at the Agency’s Northumbria Area Office, Tyneside House, Skinnerburn Road, Newcastle
upon Tyne or at Wear Valley District Council’s office at Civic Centre, Crook, Co.
Durham.
Anyone who wishes to make representation about this application should do so in writing
to the Environment Manager (Wear), Environment Agency, Tyneside House, Skinnerburn
Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE4 7AR, quoting Ref no 241/1103, not later than 23 June
2003.
