PLANNING (LISTED BUILDINGS AND CONSERVATION AREAS) ACT 1990, SECTON 69
MAESTEG TOWN CENTRE CONSERVATION AREA

Notice is given, under the provisions of the 1990 Act, that Bridgend County Borough Council has determined that the area described in the Schedule to this notice is an area of special architectural or historic interest, and that it is desirable to preserve or enhance its character or appearance. It has accordingly designated the area as a “conservation area”. The principal effects of this area being designated as a conservation area are as follows: 1. The Council is under a duty to formulate and publish proposals to ensure the preservation or enhancement of the area. 2. Consent must be obtained from the Council for the demolition of all unlisted buildings (other than excepted buildings) in the area. 3. It becomes an offence subject to certain exceptions to cut down, top, lop, uproot, wilfully damage or wilfully destroy any tree in the area except with the consent of the Council. 4. Planning applications for development which would in the opinion of the Council affect the character or appearance of the conservation area must be given publicity and representations received as a result of the publicity must be taken into account in determining the application. 5. In carrying out any function under the Planning Acts (and, in particular, in determining applications for planning permission and listed building consent), the Council and the National Assembly for Wales are required to take account of the desirability of preserving the character or appearance of the area. Schedule All properties in the following roads: Talbot Street, including the Maesteg Town Council Offices, Town Hall and Market, William Hopkin Thomas Memorial, Colonel North Memorial Hall, Post Office, War Memorial, and the former North Company Offices; Church Street; Llynfi Lane. The following properties and areas: 1-62 and 84-145 Commercial Street, including Tabor Chapel and 1-21 Clarence Court; 44-55 Neath Road including Hartshorn House; 28 & 29 Llynfi Road; 7 & 8 Church Place; St. Michael’s and All Angels’ Church and churchyard, Brynmawr Place; St. David’s Church, churchyard and hall, Castle Street; Library & Social Centre including grounds, Castle Street; Maesteg Cricket Club and cricket ground; Bus Station, Church Street; Maesteg Outdoor Market; Land to the rear of 138-143 Commercial Street and St. Michael’s and All Angels’ Church; River Llynfi from the rear of 14 Talbot Street to rear of 26 River Street, including bridges, banks and embankments; Lane adjacent to 15 Talbot Street leading to Plasnewydd Street; Lane adjacent to Colonel North Memorial Hall and the Library; All pavements outside properties and areas mentioned in the Schedule.
