TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING (LISTED BUILDINGS AND CONSERVATION AREAS) ACT 1990
CONSERVATION AREA DESIGNATION
Notice is hereby given that the above Council has authorised the designation of the
“Beehive” area, Welwyn Garden City, as a Conservation Area, with effect from 15th
September 1999.
The Conservation Area encompasses an area of Welwyn Garden City, which was developed
following the town’s designation as a New Town in 1947. It is an area which exhibits
particularly fine examples of the “Garden City” characteristics. The Conservation
Area includes Aldock, Beehive Green, Beehive Lane, Graysfield, part of Hall Grove,
Hillside, part of the west side of Howlands, Moorend, Moorlands, Moorside, Sheepcote,
Sweet Briar, The Jinnings, The Limes, The Pastures, Thumbswood and 49 and 58 Marley
Road.
The designation of this area as a Conservation Area requires the Council and the
Secretary of State for the Environment to pay special attention to the character and
appearance of this area when exercising their powers of planning control. With very
few exceptions, buildings within a Conservation Area may not be demolished except
with the consent of the Local Planning Authority. Again, in most cases, trees may
not be topped, lopped, felled, up-rooted or wilfully damaged or destroyed unless 6
weeks’ notice of the proposed action has been given to the Local Planning Authority.
A plan showing the extent of the Conservation Area can be inspected between the hours
of 8.45 a.m. and 5.15 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8.45 a.m. and 4.45 p.m. on Friday
at the Planning Department, Council Offices, The Campus, Welwyn Garden City.
