A Proclamation
ALTERING THE PROCLAMATION OF THE 21ST JULY 1987 AND THE PROCLAMATION OF THE 22ND JULY 1997 DETERMINING A NEW INSCRIPTION FOR ONE HUNDRED-POUND, FIFTY-POUND, TWENTY-FIVE-POUND AND TEN-POUND GOLD COINS, AND TWO-POUND, ONE POUND, FIFTY PENCE AND TWENTY PENCE SILVER COINS
ELIZABETH R. Whereas, under section 3(1)(b) and (h) of the Coinage Act 1971 We have power, with the advice of Our Privy Council, by Proclamation to determine the design of any coin to be made at Our Mint, and to alter any Proclamation previously made under the said section: And Whereas by Our Proclamations dated the twenty-first day of July 1987 and the twenty-second day of July 1997 We determined the specifications and designs for new coins of gold of the denominations of one hundred pounds, fifty pounds, twenty-five pounds and ten pounds and new coins of silver of the denominations of two pounds, one pound, fifty pence and twenty pence: We, therefore, in pursuance of the said section 3(1)(b) and (h) and of all other powers enabling Us in that behalf, do hereby, by and with the advice of Our Privy Council, proclaim, direct and ordain as follows:
THE HUNDRED-POUND COIN
1. The following paragraph shall be substituted for paragraph 1(4) of Our said Proclamation of the twenty-first day of July 1987: (4) The design for the said gold coin shall be as follows: For the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription ELIZABETH.II.D.G REG.FID.DEF” and 100 POUNDS” and for the reverse the figure of Britannia standing upon a rock in the sea, her right hand grasping a trident and her left hand resting on a shield and holding an olive branch, with the inscription ONE OUNCE FINE GOLD BRITANNIA” and the date of the year. The coin shall have a graining upon the edge.”.
THE FIFTY-POUND COIN
2. The following paragraph shall be substituted for paragraph 2(4) of Our said Proclamation of the twenty-first day of July 1987: (4) The design for the said gold coin shall be as follows: For the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription ELIZABETH.II.D.G REG.FID.DEF” and 50 POUNDS” and for the reverse the figure of Britannia standing upon a rock in the sea, her right hand grasping a trident and her left hand resting on a shield and holding an olive branch, with the inscription 1/2 OUNCE FINE GOLD BRITANNIA” and the date of the year. The coin shall have a graining upon the edge.”.
THE TWENTY-FIVE-POUND COIN
3. The following paragraph shall be substituted for paragraph 3(4) of Our said Proclamation of the twenty-first day of July 1987: (4) The design for the said gold coin shall be as follows: For the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription ELIZABETH.II.D.G REG.FID.DEF” and 25 POUNDS” and for the reverse the figure of Britannia standing upon a rock in the sea, her right hand grasping a trident and her left hand resting on a shield and holding an olive branch, with the inscription 1/4 OUNCE FINE GOLD BRITANNIA” and the date of the year. The coin shall have a graining upon the edge.”.
THE TEN-POUND COIN
4. The following paragraph shall be substituted for paragraph 4(4) of Our said Proclamation of the twenty-first day of July 1987: (4) The design for the said gold coin shall be as follows: For the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription ELIZABETH.II.D.G REG.FID.DEF” and 10 POUNDS” and for the reverse the figure of Britannia standing upon a rock in the sea, her right hand grasping a trident and her left hand resting on a shield and holding an olive branch, with the inscription 1/10 OUNCE FINE GOLD BRITANNIA” and the date of the year. The coin shall have a graining upon the edge.”.
THE TWO-POUND COINS
5. The following paragraph shall be substituted for paragraph 8 of Our said Proclamation of the twenty-second day of July 1997: 8. The design of the said silver two-pound coins shall be as follows: For the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription ELIZABETH.II.D.G REG.FID.DEF” and the value 2 POUNDS” and for the reverse either: a. the figure of Britannia standing upon a rock in the sea, her right hand grasping a trident and her left hand resting on a shield and holding an olive branch, with the inscription ONE OUNCE FINE SILVER”, and the word BRITANNIA” and the date of the year; or b. the figure of Britannia standing in a chariot drawn along the seashore by two horses, with the word BRITANNIA”, the inscription ONE OUNCE FINE SILVER” and the date of the year. The coins shall have a graining upon the edge.”.
THE ONE POUND COINS
6. The following paragraph shall be substituted for paragraph 12 of Our said Proclamation of the twenty-second day of July 1997: 12. The design of the said silver one pound coins shall be as follows: For the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription ELIZABETH.II.D.G REG.FID.DEF” and the value 1 POUND” and for the reverse either: a. the figure of Britannia standing upon a rock in the sea, her right hand grasping a trident and her left hand resting on a shield and holding an olive branch, with the inscription 1/2 OUNCE FINE SILVER”, and the word BRITANNIA” and the date of the year; or b. the figure of Britannia standing in a chariot drawn along the seashore by two horses, with the word BRITANNIA”, the inscription HALF OUNCE FINE SILVER” and the date of the year. The coins shall have a graining upon the edge.”.
THE FIFTY PENCE COINS
7. The following paragraph shall be substituted for paragraph 15 of Our said Proclamation of the twenty-second day of July 1997: 15. The design of the said silver fifty pence coins shall be as follows: For the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription ELIZABETH.II.D.G REG.FID.DEF” and the value 50 PENCE” and for the reverse either: a. the figure of Britannia standing upon a rock in the sea, her right hand grasping a trident and her left hand resting on a shield and holding an olive branch, with the inscription 1/4 OUNCE FINE SILVER”, and the word BRITANNIA” and the date of the year; or b. the figure of Britannia standing in a chariot drawn along the seashore by two horses, with the word BRITANNIA”, the inscription QUARTER OUNCE FINE SILVER” and the date of the year. The coins shall have a graining upon the edge.”.
THE TWENTY PENCE COINS
8. The following paragraph shall be substituted for paragraph 18 of Our said Proclamation of the twenty-second day of July 1997: 18. The design of the said silver twenty pence coins shall be as follows: For the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription ELIZABETH.II.D.G REG.FID.DEF” and the value 20 PENCE” and for the reverse either: a. the figure of Britannia standing upon a rock in the sea, her right hand grasping a trident and her left hand resting on a shield and holding an olive branch, with the inscription 1/10 OUNCE FINE SILVER”, and the word BRITANNIA” and the date of the year; or b. the figure of Britannia standing in a chariot drawn along the seashore by two horses, with the word BRITANNIA”, the inscription TENTH OUNCE FINE SILVER” and the date of the year. The coins shall have a graining upon the edge.”. 9. This Proclamation shall come into force on the twentieth day of May One thousand nine hundred and ninety-eight. Given at Our Court at Buckingham Palace, this nineteenth day of May in the year of our Lord One thousand nine hundred and ninety-eight and in the forty-seventh year of Our Reign.
