ENVIRONMENT AGENCY

APPLICATION FOR A VARIATION OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL PERMIT UNDER THE ENVIRONMENTAL PERMITTING (ENGLAND AND WALES) REGULATIONS 2016

We have received applications to vary an environmental permit from Dairy Crest Limited.

We are now consulting on the proposed decision.

Brief description of activities

The following activities are retained in the draft varied permit

• Section 6.8 Part A(1)(e): Treating and processing milk, the quantity of milk received being more than 200 tonnes per day (average value on an annual basis)

• Section 5.4 Part A(1)(a)(i): Disposal of non-hazardous waste in a facility with a capacity exceeding 50 tonnes per day by biological treatment

The following activities have been included in the draft varied permit

• Section 5.4 Part A1 (a)(ii): Disposal of non-hazardous waste in a facility with a capacity exceeding 50 tonnes per day by physico-chemical treatment

• Section 5.1 Part B(a)(v) (SWIP) and 25A (MCP)

The following activities have been removed from the draft varied permit

• Section 5.1 Part A1(b): The incineration of non-hazardous waste in a waste incineration plant or waste co-incineration plant with a capacity exceeding 3 tonnes per hour.

• Section 6.8 Part A(1)(d)(i): Treating and processing materials intended for the production of food products from animal raw materials (other than milk) at a plant with a finished product production capacity of more than 75 tonnes per day

If granted the varied permit will

Authorise an increase in cheese production capacity from 9.6 to 11.4 tonnes per hour

Prohibit the production of demineralised whey and prebiotic syrup

The draft varied permit also includes changes made because of the published BAT Conclusions for the Food, Drink and Milk Industries (2019) and the Medium Combustion Plant Directive (2015).
