CITY OF LONDON (MARKETS) BILL

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that application is being made to Parliament in the present Session by the City of London Corporation (“the Corporation”) for a Bill under the above name or short title for the purposes of which the following is a concise summary: -

To provide for the repeal of legislation relating to Billingsgate Market and the London Central Markets (commonly known as Smithfield Market), which are owned and operated by the Corporation, and the consequent cessation of the operation of those markets, to take effect on such day as may be appointed in respect of each market by the Corporation (such day required to be consistent with any provision in an agreement with a market tenant that makes provision as to when operation is to cease).

To provide for the Corporation to publish at least 90 days’ advance notice of a day so appointed.

To make provision for certain legal consequences arising from the repeals including for the release from restrictions on use of the land comprising the existing sites of the markets.

To provide for the termination (on the day appointed for the cessation of the operation of the relevant market) of a lease and any subsisting or future right to occupy, held by a market tenant who occupies premises immediately before the appointed day, and who has entered into a written agreement for such lease to be terminated and which provides for compensation for such termination.

On and after 4 December 2024 a copy of the Bill may be inspected and copies of it obtained at the price of £1 each at the office of the City Remembrancer, Guildhall, Gresham Street, London, EC2V 7HH during the hours of 9.30 to 17.00 Mondays to Fridays (closed 24 December and on Saturdays and Sundays and bank holidays). A copy of the Bill may also be viewed from 4 December 2024 on the Corporation’s website: https://cityoflondon.gov.uk.

Objection to the Bill may be made by depositing a Petition against it in the Private Bill Office of the House of Commons, if the Bill is introduced in that House or in the Office of the Clerk of the Parliaments, if the Bill is introduced in the House of Lords. The latest date for the deposit of such a Petition in the First House will be 30 January 2025 if the Bill originates in the House of Commons, or 6 February 2025 if it originates in the House of Lords. In the second House the petitioning period, of 10 days, begins on the day after the Bill is sent to that House.
