ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 15

THE A1 TRUNK ROAD (MORPETH TO ELLINGHAM) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the A1 Trunk Road, in the County of Northumberland, to enable major carriageway and bridge construction works to be carried out in safety.

The works are expected to start on Monday 31 January 2022 and will remain in force until the works are completed, an estimated period of 3 years. The effect of the Order will be, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to:

(i) impose a temporary 60mph, 50mph, 40mph 30mph and at times a 10mph speed restriction on the A1 northbound carriageway from 910 metres south of Saint Leonards Junction to 500 metres north of the B6345 overbridge, a distance of 16000 metres;

(ii) impose a temporary 60mph, 50mph, 40mph 30mph and at times a 10mph speed restriction on the A1 southbound carriageway from 10 metres south of the C111 Felton North Junction to 20 metres north of the entry slip road at the A697 Warreners House Junction, a distance of 15000 metres;

(iii) impose a temporary 60mph, 50mph, 40mph 30mph and at times a 10mph speed restriction on the A1 northbound carriageway from 1000 metres south of the B1340 overbridge at Denwick to 130 metres north of the C47 North Charlton Junction, a distance of 10500 metres;

(iv) impose a temporary 60mph, 50mph, 40mph 30mph and at times a 10mph speed restriction on the A1 southbound carriageway from 125 metres north of The Avenue Junction to 350 metres north of the overbridge at Denwick, a distance of 10500 metres. The 10mph limit will only apply when, for safety reasons, traffic has to be escorted through the works by a highway maintenance vehicle;

(v) close the laybys adjacent to the lengths of A1 northbound carriageway and southbound carriageway as described in (viii), (ix), (x) and (xi);

(vi) close the A1 northbound carriageway from the A192 and A697 Fairmoor Junction northwards for a distance of 12000 metres; during which times traffic will be diverted, using a contraflow system on to the temporary new section of the northbound carriageway adjacent to the existing length of A1 northbound carriageway from 1000 metres north of the B1340 Denwick Junction to 350 metres south of Brownie Side Junction, a distance of 9000 metres; and

(vii) impose an overtaking ban and ban vehicles with an overall width exceeding 9’9” in specified lanes of the above length of A1 northbound carriageway and temporary new section of northbound carriageway as described in (vii).

It will be necessary to close, between 9pm and 6am, at times during the works, the A1:

(viii) northbound and southbound carriageways from Warreners House Junction to Felton North Junction, a distance of 150000 metres;

(ix) northbound and southbound carriageways from Denwick Junction to North Charlton Junction, a distance of 9500 metres;

(x) northbound exit and southbound entry slip roads at the Warreners House Junction; and

(xi) northbound and southbound exit and entry slip roads at the Denwick Junction.

During the closures suitably signed alternative routes will be available at all times.

It will also be necessary to ban, 24 hours a day, for a period of up to 6 months, cyclists and pedestrians from the above lengths of carriageway as described in (vii). ;

Traffic management will be in force 24 hours a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes).
