ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984-SECTION 14(1)(A) AND THE MOTORWAYS TRAFFIC (ENGLAND AND WALES) REGULATIONS 1982 -REGULATION 16(2)

THE M6 MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 12 TO JUNCTION 16, STAFFORDSHIRE) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2018

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Highways England Company Limited (Company no.9346363) intends to make an Order on the M6 Motorway between Junction 12 and Junction 16, in the Counties of Staffordshire and Cheshire, to allow the installation of a smart motorway system, conversion to all lane running, resurfacing, road marking, installation of traffic detection sensors, improvement and maintenance works to be carried out.

The effect of the Order will be to, at different times –

(1) impose, at different times, a speed restriction of either 50 miles per hour or 60 miles per hour on -

a) the northbound and southbound carriageways of the M6 between the centreline of the Vicarage Road overbridge, south of Junction 12, and a point 1000 metres north of the centreline of the A53 Whitmore Road overbridge, northwest of Junction 15;

b) any slip road leading to or from –

i) the M6 at Junction 13;

ii) the M6 at Junction 14; and

iii) the M6 at Junction 15;

c) any slip road leading to or from the M6, to or from the Doxey Maintenance Depot at Doxey;

d) any slip road leading to or from the M6, to or from Stafford Motorway Service Area, north of Junction 14;

e) the emergency access/egress roads leading to and from the northbound and southbound carriageways of the M6, to and from Yarnfield Lane at Yarnfield;

(2) close –

a) the northbound carriageway of the M6 from its junction with the exit slip road at Junction 12, to its junction with the entry slip road at Junction 16;

b) the southbound carriageway of the M6 from its junction with the exit slip road at Junction 16, to its junction with the entry slip road at Junction 12; and

c) the slip roads described at (1)b), c) and d) above;

d) the emergency access/egress roads described in (1)e) above;

(3) close lanes of the lengths of carriageway described in (1)a) above and allow vehicles to use the hard shoulder;

(4) prohibit vehicles with an overall width exceeding 6’6” (2 metres) from entering or proceeding in the offside lane of the lengths motorway described in (1)a) above;

(5) close, at different times, lanes of –

a) the northbound carriageway of the M6 from the centreline of the Eccleshall Road overbridge near Yarnfield, to a point 200 metres north of the centreline of the A500 overbridge at Junction 15;

b) the southbound carriageway of the M6 from a point 200 metres north of the centreline of the A500 overbridge at Junction 15, to the centreline of the Eccleshall Road overbridge, near Yarnfield;

c) the northbound carriageway of the M6 from the centreline of Aston Bank overbridge, south of Junction 14, to the centreline of Eccleshall Road overbridge, near Yarnfield;

d) the southbound carriageway of the M6 from the centreline of Eccleshall Road overbridge, near Yarnfield, to the centreline of Aston Bank overbridge, south of Junction 14;

e) the northbound carriageway of the M6 from a point 700 metres south of the centrepoint of the roundabout at Junction 13, to the centreline of Aston Bank overbridge, south of Junction 14; and

f) the southbound carriageway of the M6 from the centreline of Aston Bank overbridge, south of Junction 14, to a point 700 metres south of the centrepoint of the roundabout at Junction 13,

and allow traffic to use the offside lane of the opposite carriageway in a contraflow manner

The work will be carried out in phases and is expected to start on Saturday 17 March 2018 and continue for approximately three years. The Order will come into force on Friday 16 March 2018. The carriageway and slip road closures will take place overnight between the hours of 22:00 and 06:00 hours Monday to Thursday, 22:00 hours Friday to 08:00 hours on Saturday, 22:00 hours Saturday to 10:00 hours Sunday and 22:00 hours to 05:30 hours Monday. It is expected that a 24 hour closure also will be required.

The speed restrictions of either 50 miles per hour or 60 miles per hour (as indicated by signs) and width restrictions will be in force 24 hours a day from 00.01 on 17 March 2018, for the duration of the works.

Vehicles being used for special forces purposes will be exempt from the speed restriction. Vehicles being used for police, fire and rescue authority or ambulance purposes will be exempt from the speed restriction, closures and width restrictions. Vehicles being used in connection with the works or by a traffic officer will be exempt from the closures and width restrictions.

Diversion routes via the A5, the A449, the A34, the A5013, the A500 and alternative junctions of the M6 will be signed. Local diversion routes will also be signed.
