The Department of the Environment has made a Statutory Rule entitled “The Motor Vehicles (Wearing of Seat Belts by Children in Front Seats)(Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2015” (S.R. 2015 No. 23), which comes into operation on 20th April 2015.

These Regulations amend the Motor Vehicles (Wearing of Seat Belts by Children in Front Seats) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1993 to implement the requirements of Council Directive 2014/37/EC (OJ No. L 59 28.2.2014, p32).

The Regulations will introduce uniform provisions concerning the approval of enhanced Child Restraint Systems as required by UNECE Regulation 129 which was implemented into EU law through Directive 2014/37/EU on 28 February 2014. The Regulation sets provisions for a number of technical enhancements to the existing regulatory requirements including: restraint categorisation; crash test dummy; test bench; side impact dynamic test and travelling orientation.
