'At the going down of the sun and in the morning / We will remember them.'

The government and the Royal British Legion are inviting communities to organise remembrance events and vigils to commemorate the service and sacrifice of those who lost their lives in the Battle of the Somme, alongside national and international commemorations.

From sundown on 30 June and on 1 July, vigils will mirror when those in the conflict waited in the trenches before beginning their advance at 7:30am, 100 years ago.

When the offensive was halted in November, more than 1,000,000 Commonwealth, French and German soldiers had been wounded, captured or killed. Nine Victoria Crosses were awarded for actions on the first day of the Somme alone, which remains the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army.

The Royal British Legion has produced a guide to organising an event or vigil, Remember the Battle of the Somme 1916-2016.

In addition, the Imperial War Museums (IWM) and members of the First World War Centenary Partnership are working together to show the UNESCO listed film The Battle of the Somme to audiences across the world. Shot and screened in 1916, it was the first feature length documentary about war.
