THE A1(M) MOTORWAY JUNCTIONS 2 - 4

TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Secretary of State for Transport intends to make an Order on the A1(M) Motorway, in the County of Hertfordshire, under sections 14(1)(a) and (7) and 15(2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on the road.

The effect of the Order would be —

  • a to authorise the following restrictions on the A1(M) between a point 400 metres north of the overbridge at Junction 2 (A1001 – South Way), at marker post 29/8, and a point 500 metres north of Coopers Green Lane underbridge (B197) north of Junction 4 (A414/A1001/A6129), at marker post 35/4:
    • i lane closures and the phased closure of lengths of both carriageways on this length of the A1(M); contraflow systems would be in operation on the carriageway that remains open, hard shoulder running would be authorised where this is in use as one lane of the motorway and vehicle width restrictions (over 6 feet 6 inches) would be in force in certain lanes, and
    • ii to impose temporary mandatory 40/50mph speed restrictions on this length of the A1(M), including the slip roads leading to and from this length of road;
    ii to impose temporary mandatory 40/50mph speed restrictions on this length of the A1(M), including the slip roads leading to and from this length of road;
  • b to prohibit abnormal loads (over 4.0 metres wide) on the northbound A1(M) between Junction 3 (A414/A1001) and Junction 4 (A414/A1001/A6129) and on the southbound A1(M) between Junction 4 (A414/A1001/A6129) and Junction 2 (A1001);
  • c to authorise the overnight closure of:
    • i the slip road leading from the northbound carriageway of the A1(M) at Junction 3 (A414/A1001),
    • ii the slip road leading to the northbound carriageway of the A1(M) at Junction 3 (A414/A1001),
    • iii the slip road leading from the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) at Junction 3 (A414/A1001),
    • iv the slip road leading from the northbound carriageway of the A1(M) at Junction 4 (A414/A1001/A6129),
    • v the slip road leading from the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) at Junction 4 (A414/A1001/A6129), and
    • vi the slip road leading to the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) at Junction 4 (A414/A1001/A6129); and
    ii the slip road leading to the northbound carriageway of the A1(M) at Junction 3 (A414/A1001), iii the slip road leading from the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) at Junction 3 (A414/A1001), iv the slip road leading from the northbound carriageway of the A1(M) at Junction 4 (A414/A1001/A6129), v the slip road leading from the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) at Junction 4 (A414/A1001/A6129), and vi the slip road leading to the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) at Junction 4 (A414/A1001/A6129); and
  • d to authorise the overnight closure of:
    • i the northbound carriageway of the A1(M) between Junction 3 (A414/A1001) and Junction 4 (A414/A1001/A6129), and
    • ii the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) between Junction 4 (A414/A1001/A6129) and Junction 2 (A1001).
    ii the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) between Junction 4 (A414/A1001/A6129) and Junction 2 (A1001).

These measures would be in the interests of road safety to enable contractors to refurbish Hatfield Tunnel.

It is expected that the work would start on or after 1st May 2009 and last for approximately 2 years; the closures at (c) and (d) above would take place at the following times:

Monday-Thursday nights 2200-0530 hours
Friday nights 2300-0700 hours
Saturday nights 2200-0700 hours
Sunday nights 2230-0530 hours

The Order would come into force on 1st May 2009 and continue until 1st May 2011.

During the closure outlined at (c)(i) above, traffic affected would be diverted north on the A1(M) to Junction 4 and return south on the A1(M) to Junction 3. During the closure outlined at (c)(ii) above, traffic affected would be diverted north on the A1001 (Comet Way) to join the A1(M) at Junction 4. During the closure outlined at (c)(iii) above, traffic affected would be diverted south on the A1(M) to Junction 1 (A1/M25) and return north on the A1(M) to Junction 3.

During the closure outlined at (c)(iv) above, traffic affected would be diverted north on the A1(M) to Junction 6 (A1000) and return south on the A1(M) to Junction 4. During the closure outlined at (c)(v) above, traffic affected would be diverted south on the A1(M) to Junction 3 and return north on the A1001 (Comet Way) to Junction 4. During the closure outlined at (c)(vi) above, traffic affected would be diverted south on the A1001 (Comet Way and Roehyde Way) to join the A1(M) at Junction 2.

During the closure outlined at (d)(i) above, northbound traffic would be diverted at Junction 3, north on the A1001 (Comet Way) to re-join the A1(M) at Junction 4. During the closure outlined at (d)(ii) above, southbound traffic would be diverted at Junction 4, south on the A1001 (Comet Way and Roehyde Way) to re-join the A1(M) at Junction 2.

The lane closures, carriageway closures, contraflow systems, use of the hard shoulder, vehicle width restrictions, temporary mandatory speed restrictions, abnormal loads prohibition, overnight slip road closures, overnight carriageway closures and diversion routes would be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works period.
