PLANNING (LISTED BUILDINGS & CONSERVATION AREAS) ACT 1990
NOTICE OF DESIGNATION OF A CONSERVATION AREA
GREAT SOMERFORD/MALMESBURY CONSERVATION AREA, WILTSHIRE

Notice is hereby given that North Wiltshire District Council revised the above Conservation Areas on 29 March 2006. A plan of the Great Somerford/Malmesbury Conservation Areas is available for public inspection, free of charge, at the District Council Offices, Monkton Park, Chippenham, Wiltshire, at the following times: 9.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Thursday, 9.00 am to 4.30 pm Friday. The Great Somerford Conservation Area was originally designated in March 1991. This latest review amends the boundary to include land associated with the former Somerford railway station complex and the adjacent Second World War pill box, land associated with establishment of the Free Gardens (allotments) from 1809, as well as land associated with properties of historic and architectural interest in Dauntsey Road and Hollow Street. These latest additions cause three small modern developments at Winkins Lane, Paddock Close and Manor Park to be entirely encircled by features of historic and architectural interest, the local environment of which would also benefit from the protection that Conservation Area designation brings. The Malmesbury Conservation Area was originally designated in May 1971, with a subsequent review to the boundary in 1987. This latest review amends the boundary to include land to the north of Burnham Road, land to the west and south-west of the junction between Bristol Street and Foxley Road, and land to the south-west of Westport Bridge. These latest additions have mainly been developed as part of the town since at least the early 19th Century and contain many buildings of local historic and architectural interest from the 19th and early 20th Centuries. The principal objective of designation is to preserve and enhance the character and appearance of this area. Designation provides control over demolition, and anyone wishing to demolish any building or structure, or part of any building or structure, must first apply for Conservation Area Consent to the local planning authority. Further controls require anyone proposing to carry out work to trees within the Conservation Area, which are not already protected by a Tree Preservation Order, to give the local planning authority 6 weeks’ notice of their intention. Designation also requires the local authority to publish an advertisement in the local newspaper and display a notice on or near the site in the case of every planning application which the authority consider would affect the character or appearance of the Conservation Area or the setting of a Listed Building. The application will not be determined for 21 days, after the notice is first displayed, during which time representations relating to any such application may be made to the Council. In determining the application the local planning authority shall take into account the representation made.
