RADIOACTIVE SUBSTANCES ACT 1993

THE ENVIRONMENT AGENCY IS CONSULTING ON CHANGES TO AUTHORISATIONS TO DISPOSE OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE FROM THE POWER STATIONS OPERATED BY BRITISH ENERGY GENERATION LIMITED

These Power Stations are: Dungeness B in Kent Hinkley Point B in Somerset Hartlepool in Cleveland Heysham 1 & 2 in Lancashire Sizewell B in Suffolk The Environment Agency is considering detailed information relating to British Energy Generation Limited’s 6 power stations and their future operations for the disposal of radioactive waste. Authorisations are reviewed periodically to ensure that the limits and conditions are still appropriate and effective and continue to ensure that the public and the environment are properly protected. We are seeking consistent regulation across all 6 sites in England. The authorisations we issue cover all types of radioactive waste disposals and require operators of the power stations to minimise the overall impact of these disposals. Copies of the consultation pack include information from British Energy Generation Limited, our explanatory document and draft certificates of authorisation. The documents are available to view at libraries and Environment Agency public registers local to the power station sites.
