Designation of Conservation Area

Notice is hereby given that in accordance with section 69 of the Planning (Listed Buildings & Conservation Areas) Act 1990, Wear Valley District Council, on 26th November 1997, has determined that the area described below is an area of special architectural or historic interest, the character of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance, and has therefore designated this area as an extension of the Cowshill Conservation Area.   The Conservation Area has been extended to the west to include the A689, Copthill Farm, Bridge End Cottage, the lake which was previously the Whin Quarry, the Killhope Burn, Bents Farm and Bents Cottages.   The effect of the designation of the extension to the conservation area is as follows:   Conservation area consent will now be required for the demolition of all unlisted buildings (other than excepted buildings) in the area;   Planning applications for development which would in the opinion of the local planning authority affect the character or appearance of the conservation area must be given publicity and representationis received as a result of the publicity must be taken into account in determining the application;   It becomes an offence subject to certain exceptions to cut down, top, lop uproot, wilfully damage or wilfully destroy any tree in the area except with the consent of the local planning authority;   The local planning authority are now under a duty to formulate and publish proposals for the preservation and enhancement of the area.   A map of the conservation area may be inspected, free of charge, during normal office hours at the office of the local planning authority at the Civic Centre, Crook, County Durham DL15 9ES.
