Due to prolonged dry weather, significantly below average rainfall and continued high demand, South West Water is implementing a Temporary Use Ban, also known as a hosepipe ban. This applies across its entire service area which includes Devon, Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, and parts of Dorset and Somerset.

In these circumstances, it is important for South West Water to carefully assess what measures are necessary and proportionate to maintain a resilient and secure water supply for customers. Those decisions must also take account of the Environment Agency's drought management framework, together with relevant national and regional drought responses.

Do not use a hosepipe for:

• Watering gardens and plants

• Cleaning private vehicles

• Cleaning paths, patios, walls, windows and other artificial surfaces

• Filling or maintaining swimming pools, paddling pools and hot tubs

• Filling or maintaining ponds and ornamental fountains

• Cleaning private leisure boats.

The restrictions also apply to sprinklers, pressure washers, dripper hoses and automatic irrigation systems connected to the mains water supply.

Exceptions apply

Some customers and activities are covered by statutory exceptions, including certain Priority Services Register customers and activities relating to animal welfare, health and safety, religious practices and specific business needs.

Statutory Notice

South West Water gives notice pursuant to Sections 76 and 76A-C of the Water Industry Act 1991 that a Temporary Use Ban will apply from 3am on Saturday 8th August 2026 until further notice. Any person who contravenes the restrictions may be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £1,000.
