ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1)(A), 15(2) AND PARAGRAPH 27(1) OF SCHEDULE 9

AND THE MOTORWAY TRAFFIC (ENGLAND AND WALES) REGULATIONS 1982 – REGULATION 16(2)

THE M1 MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 12 TO JUNCTION 16) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2018

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Highways England Company Limited (Company no.9346363) intends to make an Order on the M1 Motorway, in the Counties of Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire to allow smart motorway works, bridge works to include replacement of joints and waterproofing and routine maintenance works to be carried out.

The effect of the Order will be to, at different times –

1. impose a 50 or 60 miles per hour speed limit on the northbound and southbound carriageways of the M1 from the centreline of the A5120 Harlington Road overbridge at Junction 12, Toddington, to a point 2.2 kilometres northwest of the centreline of the western overbridge of the roundabout at Junction 16;

2. close -

i) the northbound carriageway of the M1 from its junction with the exit slip road at Junction 12, to its junction with the entry slip road at Junction 16; and

ii) the southbound carriageway of the M1 from its junction with the exit slip road at Junction 16, to its junction with the entry slip road at Junction 12;

3. close

i) any slip road leading to or from the lengths of the M1 described at 2.i) and ii) above; and

ii) any slip road leading to or from Newport Pagnell Motorway Service Area, northwest of M1 Junction 14;

4. close various lanes of the northbound and southbound carriageways of the M1 described in 2.i) and ii) above and allow traffic to run on the hard shoulder;

5. prohibit vehicles with an overall width exceeding 2.5 metres from entering or proceeding in Lane 3 of the lengths of the M1 described a 1. above;

6. prohibit vehicles with an overall width exceeding 3.0 metres from entering or proceeding in Lane 2 of the lengths of the M1 described at 1. above;

7. prohibit vehicles with an overall width exceeding 3.25 metres from entering or proceeding in Lane 1 of the lengths of the M1 described at 1. above; and

8. close, at different times, lanes of –

a) the northbound carriageway of the M1 from a point 70 metres south of the centre point of the High Street overbridge at Ridgemont, to a point 450 metres south of the centre point of the Cranfield Road overbridge at Wavendon and allow traffic to use lanes 2 or 3 (where it has 3 lanes) or lanes 3 or 4 (where it has four lanes) of the southbound carriageway in a contraflow manner; and

b) the southbound carriageway of the M1 from a point 450 metres south of the centre point of the Cranfield Road overbridge at Wavendon, to a point 70 metres north of the centre point of the High Street overbridge at Ridgmont and allow traffic to use lanes 2 or 3 (where it has 3 lanes) or lanes 3 or 4 (where it has four lanes) of the northbound carriageway in a contraflow manner.

The work is expected to start on Monday 5 February 2018, and continue for approximately 4 years. The speed limit of either 50 miles per hour or 60 miles per hour and width restrictions will be in place for 24 hours per day and are expected to start on 30 April 2018 and continue for the duration of the works. The order will come into force on Friday 2 February 2018.

Vehicles being used for special forces purposes will be exempt from the speed restriction. Vehicles being used for police, fire and rescue authority or ambulance purposes will be exempt from the speed restriction, closures and width restriction. Vehicles being used by a traffic officer or being used in connection with the works will be exempt from the closures and width restriction.

Diversion routes via the A5120, the A507, the A421, the A4146, the A509, the A43, the A45, the A5076, the A5123, the A4500, the A5 and alternative junctions of the M1 will be signed.
