First World War hand-written wills give 'new insight on our war heroes'

The hand-written wills of 230,000 British and Empire soldiers have been placed on a new website, allowing families and historians to view them for the first time.

About five per cent of the wills contain personal letters which were intended for loved ones back home but never posted.

Instead, they lay alongside the writers' wills in sealed archive boxes for 100 years.
