The October 2025 company insolvency stats for England and Wales have been published by The Insolvency Service, together with related figures for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Company insolvency statistics for England and Wales – October 2025

After seasonal adjustment there were 2,029 company insolvencies in October 2025. This was 2% higher than in September 2025 and 17% higher than October 2024. The increase of 2% compared to September 2025 is less than the average absolute change of 10% between consecutive months over the past three years.

In October 2025 there were:

  • 1,592 creditors’ voluntary liquidations (CVLs)
  • 301 compulsory liquidations
  • 119 administrations
  • 17 company voluntary arrangements (CVAs)
  • 0 receiverships

CVLs

In October 2025, CVLs accounted for 78% of all company insolvencies. The number of CVLs was similar to September 2025 and 11% higher than October 2024.

Compulsory liquidations

The number of compulsory liquidations was 8% higher than in September 2025 and 68% higher than in October 2024.

Administrations

The number of administrations was 3% lower than in September 2025, but 17% higher than in October 2024. However, the average monthly number of administrations so far in 2025 is lower than the 2024 monthly average.

CVAs

The number of CVAs was the same as in September 2025 and 42% higher than in October 2024. Numbers remain low compared to historical levels. CVAs are not seasonally adjusted due to low volumes.

Receivership appointments

There were no receivership appointments in October 2025. Receivership appointments are now rare with only two in the past 12 months ending October 2025.

Insolvency rate statistics for England and Wales – October 2025

The company liquidation rate in the 12 months to October 2025 was 53.4 per 10,000 companies on the effective register in England and Wales. This corresponds to 1 in 187 companies entering insolvency.

Company insolvencies by industry in England and Wales – October 2025

The three industries (in accordance with SIC 2007) that experienced the highest number of insolvencies in the 12 months to October 2025 were:

  • construction (3,933 insolvencies, 17% of cases with industry captured)
  • wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (3,749 insolvencies, 16% of cases with industry captured)
  • accommodation and food service activities (3,3370 insolvencies, 14% of cases with industry captured)

Company insolvency statistics for Scotland – October 2025

The Accountant in Bankruptcy (AiB), Scotland’s Insolvency Service, administers company insolvency in Scotland.

In October 2025 there were 115 company insolvencies, which was the same as the number in October 2024. Of the total company insolvencies in Scotland, there were:

  • 61 CVLs
  • 50 compulsory liquidations
  • 4 administrations
  • 0 CVAs
  • 0 receivership appointments

Historically, compulsory liquidations were the most common type of company insolvency in Scotland. However, since October 2020, numbers of CVLs have remained higher than numbers of compulsory liquidations.

Company insolvency statistics for Northern Ireland – October 2025

In October 2025 there were 48 company insolvencies in Northern Ireland, which was 55% higher than in October 2024. Of the total company insolvencies, there were:

  • 35 compulsory liquidations
  • 12 CVLs
  • 1 CVA
  • 0 administrations
  • 0 receivership appointments
