Monthly UK insolvency statistics - November 2023

The individual and company November 2023 insolvency statistics for England and Wales have been published by the Insolvency Service, together with related insolvency figures for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Company insolvency statistics for England and Wales – November 2023

In November 2023 there was a total of 2,466 registered company insolvencies in England and Wales, which included:

  • 1,962 creditors’ voluntary liquidations (CVLs)
  • 359 compulsory liquidations
  • 133 administrations
  • 12 company voluntary arrangements (CVAs)
  • 0 receivership appointments

Overall company insolvencies in November 2023 were 21% higher when compared to November 2022.

In November 2023:

  • CVLs were 23% higher when compared to November 2022
  • compulsory liquidations were 22% higher when compared to November 2022
  • administrations were 1% lower when compared to November 2022
  • CVAs were 20% higher when compared to November 2022

Individual insolvency statistics for England and Wales – November 2023

In November 2023, there were 8,243 individual insolvencies, which was 21% lower than in November 2022. Personal insolvencies in November 2023 included:

  • 4,292 IVAs
  • 661 bankruptcies (522 debtor applications and 139 creditor petitions)
  • 3,290 DROs

Individual voluntary arrangements (IVAs)

IVAs in November 2023 were 44% lower when compared to November 2022. IVA numbers in 2023 to date have been lower than the record-high numbers in 2022.

Bankruptcies

Bankruptcies in November 2023 were 18% higher than in November 2022, with debtor applications 17% higher and creditor petitions 20% higher.

Debt relief orders

The number of DROs in November 2023 were 45% higher than in November 2022. It’s noted that DRO numbers were volatile in early 2023 at the time of introduction of new DRO hubs and are now higher than pre-2020 levels.

Company insolvency statistics for Scotland – November 2023

The Accountant in Bankruptcy, Scotland’s Insolvency Service, administers company insolvency in Scotland. They reported that in November 2023 there were 109 company insolvencies in total, 8% lower than the number in November 2022.

Total corporate insolvencies in Scotland in November 2023 consisted of:

  • 30 compulsory liquidations
  • 74 CVLs
  • 5 administrations
  • 0 CVAs
  • 0 receivership appointments

Company insolvency statistics for Northern Ireland – November 2023

In Northern Ireland in November 2023 there were 26 company insolvencies. This was 30% higher than the number in November 2022. They consisted of:

  • 6 CVLs
  • 13 compulsory liquidations
  • 5 administration
  • 2 CVAs
  • 0 administrative receiverships

Individual insolvency statistics for Northern Ireland – November 2023

There were 111 individual insolvencies in Northern Ireland in November 2023. This was 24% lower when compared to November 2022. They consisted of:

  • 70 IVAs
  • 21 DROs
  • 20 bankruptcies
