Probate fees: planned increase shelved

Ahead of the general election, plans to raise the legal fees payable after death (probate fees) have been shelved.

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson confirmed that the proposals would not have enough time to pass through parliament before it closes ahead of June’s election. Whether these changes will still go ahead after the election has yet to be confirmed.

Under the proposed changes, a sliding fee scale, linked to the value of the estate, was to be implemented, ranging from £300 to £20,000.
