ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTIONS 14 & 15

THE M1 MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 30 TO JUNCTION 36) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Secretary of State for Transport has made an Order on the M1 Motorway, in the Districts of Rotherham, Sheffield and Barnsley, to enable carriageway construction works to be carried out in safety.

The Order will come into effect on 2 September 2013 and will remain in force until the works are completed, an estimated period of 2 years.

The effect of the Order will be to close, at times during the works, sections of the northbound and southbound carriageways of the M1 between Junction 30 and Junction 36, a distance of approximately 33,000 metres, and including the associated slip roads at Junctions 30 (Barlborough), 31 (Aston), 32 (Thurcroft), 33 (Catcliffe), 34 north & 34 south (Tinsley), 35 (Thorpe Hesley), 35A (Stocksbridge) and 36 (Tankersley) and the link roads connecting the M1 southbound carriageway with the M18 northbound carriageway and connecting the M18 southbound carriageway with the M1 northbound carriageway. During the closures suitably signed alternative routes will be available at all times.

It will be necessary to impose, 24 hours a day for the duration of the works, a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the M1 northbound and southbound carriageways from the southern overbridge at Junction 30 to the northern overbridge at Junction 36, a distance of 32,500 metres and including the above mentioned slip roads and link roads.

The works will require lane closures on the above lengths of carriageway, slip roads and link roads during which times the hardshoulders will be used for traffic and vehicles with an overall width exceeding 8’ 2’’ will be banned from using specified lanes as indicated by traffic signs.

Traffic management will be in force 24 hours a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for traffic officer or winter maintenance purposes). Where the temporary closures necessitate diversions that directly affect one or more local highway authorities the times of those closures and diversionary routes will be agreed in advance with the relevant local highway authorities. Such agreement shall not be unreasonably withheld by the said local authorities.
